“Most people don’t feel good if the streets, parks, and gardens in their neighbourhoods are scruffy and not properly maintained,” the expert noted. “Budget cuts to local government funding have prioritized social care, but other services, including street cleaning, weeding, and graffiti removal, have faced significant reductions—up to half in some cases. This affects the overall appearance of neighbourhoods and impacts residents’ pride in their communities.”
Local councils are now exploring different methods to improve cleanliness. One borough has introduced a volunteer scheme to address neglected areas, encouraging residents to participate in maintaining their surroundings. Another has implemented a more efficient streetlight contract to enhance urban upkeep. Additionally, some councils are looking into smarter waste management strategies, emphasizing reuse and recycling to reduce the costs associated with rubbish collection and disposal.
Efforts are underway to prevent further decline and restore civic pride by involving both authorities and residents in maintaining a cleaner, more attractive urban environment.
